The Actor, Matthew Perry Opens Up In SPEC On His Drug Addiction Recovery

Matthew Perry, the comedian, came up to speak about his drug addiction as the part of SPEC Connaissance series

He talks that “Hello, my name is Matthew Perry, and I am an alcoholic.”

Last night, At Irvine Auditorium in front of the enormous audience, the actor, and the comedian, Matthew Perry had appeared entirely in his element on stage to talk on the very personal subject about his battle with alcohol and drug addiction.

Matthew Perry drew an enthusiastic, loyal crowd with his talk as a part of this “semester’s social planning  and events committee Connaissance speaker series.”

The actor and the comedian, Matthew Perry is best known for playing the role of Chandler Bing from America’s hit sitcom, Friends. Recently, he has starred in “Go On” of NBC and also in other TV shows and movies.

Nowadays, he was traveling around different colleges across the country to share his testimony on his recovery from the alcohol and drug addiction, and he is sponsoring others who struggle with alcoholism.

Jason Fernandes, SPEC Connaissance co-director, and college junior said that “We think that drug and alcohol addiction on college campuses is a severe issue that’s not talked about much. A lot of addictions students have dismissed as a part of college life.”

Initially, Matthew Perry used his comedy to make easy for the audience and then he proceeds with the story of his struggle.

Matthew Perry said that “If I start thinking about having a drink, all other thoughts go away. I don’t think about family, loved ones, sports. I just think about that drink.”

He has made clear the audience for the one point from all his statements about his alcoholism.

He also said that “It’s not shameful. That’s a point I want to drive home.”

He finally decided around in 1997 to get help for rehabilitation. He has also addicted to painkillers and even other prescription medications. Then he met with a sponsor who named Earl. The sponsor told him the importance of selflessness.

Matthew Perry said that “I have been lead in the movies, on television shows, and also nominated for Emmy’s. But the best thing about me that I can say is that people who can’t stop drinking come up to me and say, Can you help me? And I can say, Yes.”

After listening to his this statement, the whole audience erupted with applause.

After Matthew Perry’s statements, the event moved to the other discussion which was hosted by a moderator. At the one point who asked how the media played an active role in Matthew Perry’s rehabilitation. Then he responded to moderator’s question that “I could go to a bar and could try to get a drink, and everybody would be like, ‘No, You can’t have that'” because of the media coverage of his addiction.

Since then, Matthew Perry has made a complete turnaround. The moderator mentioned him that he had won the Champion of recovery award. And Perry remarked for the award that “Thank you for bringing that up. I’m an award-winning alcoholic.”

After his statements, the event concluded with an open Q and A round in which audience lined up at microphones to talk with Matthew Perry. One of the students from the audience has confessed about his drug problem, and Matthew Perry offered to him to speak with at the end personally.

Matthew Perry said that “I don’t feel shame or feeling of grief for my past. And As far down the scale that I went, it’s that I can help many more people.”

All the audience were happy with his talks.

Xiaoyan, the college junior said that “I was thrilled to see that he is just like Chandler in real life. I think people who are alcoholics will see they are not alone and reach out.”

Tara Hofbauer, another college junior said that “I don’t usually come to speaker events, this is my first one. My mom said you missed Bill Clinton, Michelle Obama, and Malcolm Gladwell, but of course, you come to Matthew Perry.”
